Adult Required: Sea Scouts
Adult Training Courses: Sea Scouts
As a Sea Scouting leader, you owe it to the youth members you mentor to learn as much as you can about Scouting and how to run your ship. All positions in Sea Scouting need to complete Youth Protection Training (good for two years).
Required Sea Scouting Courses
I’m a Skipper or Mate – what’s required to be “100% trained”?
- Youth Protection Training
- Hazardous Weather Training
- Sea Scout Adult Leader Basics Training
Youth Protection Training – Scouting America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. Every adult must be current in Youth Protection Training (sometimes called “YPT” for short).
-
- You may take Youth Protection Training in a self-paced online course through Scouting America’s national web training center called My.Scouting.org.
- The training must be renewed every two years.
- If you still feel like you’re not sure what Youth Protection Training is, visit this page for a little more information.
Hazardous Weather Training – This training discusses how to manage risks from the weather to our Scouting family.
-
- You may take Hazardous Weather Training in a self-paced online course through Scouting America’s national web training center called My.Scouting.org.
- The training must be renewed every two years.
- If you still feel like you want more information about Hazardous Weather Training, visit this page.
Sea Scout Adult Leader Basic Training – This course is the first step in training for all Sea Scout leaders. This training focuses on the skills and attributes necessary to be an effective advisor in the ship’s delivery of service to youth in your specific geographic location. It is intended primarily to enhance individual knowledge of and connectivity with the strategic plan, program and resources, while emphasizing personal skills necessary for the development of youth in the Sea Scouting program.

- Sea Scout Adult Leader Basic Training does not expire.

Why doesn't my training show up in my Scouting America records?
Often leaders are surprised to receive notification that they are not trained. Most often, the volunteer was actually not registered in the position they are holding. Sometimes they have not completely registered in MyScouting.org and their trainings are not being recorded. Leaders can call (512) 617-8618 to get answers to their training status and questions.
Optional Training Courses Sea Scout Leaders May Take
Seabadge
Seabadge is intense leadership and management training focused on the “how-to” aspects of managing a successful youth-led Sea Scout program.
Climbing Instructor Training
Climbing and Rappelling are among the Scouting activities which challenge and captivate the imagination of all ages.
C.O.P.E. Facilitator Training
C.O.P.E. is a set of group initiative games and low and high course activities. Some of the activities involve a group challenge, while others test individual skills and agility; only a few require athletic strength. Participants climb, swing, balance, jump, and think of solutions to a variety of activities.
Chaplain Training
Chaplain training is focused on providing the best trained and motivated adult volunteers to help Scouts uphold their Duty to God from the Scout Oath, and the 12th point of the Scout Law: A Scout is Reverent.
Wilderness First Aid
Wilderness First Aid is a 16-hour hands-on course that emphasizes the issues that may be encountered with illness and injury when definitive medical care is more than one hour away.
Safe Swim Defense
Whenever Scouts swim, Scouting America’s Safe Swim Defense plan must be followed. This training will cover the plan’s eight points.
Safety Afloat
Before a Scouting America group may engage in any watercraft activity, adult leaders for such activity must complete Safety Afloat training, have a Safety Afloat commitment card, and be dedicated to full compliance with all nine points of Safety Afloat.
Swimming and Water Rescue
Training for Scouting America Swimming and Water Rescue provides leaders with information and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to swimming emergencies during unit swimming activities.
Climb On Safely
Climb On Safely is Scouting America’s procedure for organizing climbing/rappelling activities at a natural site or a specifically designed facility such as a climbing wall or tower.
Driver Improvement Program
Prevent accidents from happening on the road to or from Scouting activities.
STEM Nova Counselor Training
Help Scouts earn Nova Awards and encourage their natural curiosity about STEM concepts and fields.
STEM Supernova Mentor Training
Supernova awards honor Scouts for exceptional STEM achievement. But, Scouts can’t earn a Supernova unless they work with a Supernova Mentor.
The Trainer’s EDGE
The Trainer’s EDGE is a required train-the-trainer course for Wood Badge and National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) staff.
