July 4 flood information
Like so many others, we have been watching the devastation of the July 4 weekend’s flash floods here in Central Texas. We offer prayers of comfort and healing to all who have lost a loved one or have a loved one missing.
The Scout Oath calls on us to “help other people at all times,” and this value is especially important in times like this. Emergency officials have repeatedly stated that while they welcome the public’s help, it is important that the help be organized and not interfere with ongoing search and rescue efforts.
Disaster Relief Work
Our council is in communication with the Austin Disaster Relief Network as to potential volunteer opportunities to help those affected by these floods. While no specific request has been made at this time, all who would like to be considered for different relief projects may register now at ADRN’s website (see button below). Registering does not commit you to participating, but it is a requirement for deployment by ADRN.
Donation drives
Often there is an age minimum for disaster relief work, as it may involve working with power tools and other situations not appropriate for younger Scouts. If you are not able and/or your Scouts are not old enough to directly volunteer for relief project work, you can still take part in efforts to help victims of the floods. We have linked below to a list of relief drives that is being updated by Austin Monthly magazine:
Our partners at A+ Federal Credit Union are hosting a drive to collect necessities for flood victims, including cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, food and water, and more. Donated items can be dropped off at these A+FCU branch locations: 290/Main, Bastrop, Bee Cave, Buda, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Harker Heights, Hutto, Leander, North Austin, Northwest Hills, Pflugerville, Round Rock, San Marcos, South Austin, Southwest Austin, and Trails at 620.
Flooding has caused damage at our Smilin V Scout Ranch in Liberty Hill. Water has washed away some sections of fencing and damaged the camp’s kitchen, one bath house, and multiple roads. Here are July 5 video reports of the damage from our Lead Ranger:
