Conservation Geocache Course
Our council’s Cache to Eagle series is a two-part virtual geocache course with discovery locations at Scouting America’s Distinguished Conservation Service Award (DCSA) and environmentally-focused Eagle project sites across our area. During these geocache searches, Scouts and the Austin-area community will see and learn hands-on about many topics including urban forestry, pollinator habitat, rainwater gardens, waterway and aquifer health, dark sky lighting principles, avian migration, invasive species, and historical preservation.
Each of the ten geocache sites highlight collaborative conservation efforts between our Scouts and some of our local community partners, which include: Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Mayfield Park and Preserve, Austin Public Library, Neill Cochran House Museum, TreeFolks, City of Austin Watershed Department, Life in the City United Methodist Church, Travis Audubon Society, Shoal Creek Conservancy, Camp Mabry, DarkSky Texas, City of Bee Cave (and City of Bee Cave PARD).
What is geocaching? Using a Global Positioning System (GPS) device, participants use specific location coordinates to search for “geocaches,” usually hidden containers or markers. Think of it like an exciting treasure hunt!
So whether you are interested in earning the Geocaching Merit Badge (re: requirement 8a), are looking to be inspired by some incredible Scout-led conservation projects, or just want a fun way to enjoy the outdoors, check out our council’s Cache to Eagle courses!
To participate, download the free AdventureLab app on a mobile device and log in. Once in the app, search for the CAC Cache to Eagle (1/2) or (2/2).
