Trainer’s Development

Trainer’s Development (formerly known as Trainer’s EDGE) is a multi-part course designed to help leaders conduct training sessions for other leaders.

Fundamentals Part 1: Science of Training

This course is designed to help Scouts and Scouters, regardless of their training experience, identify effective training methods for a variety of purposes. It will help freshen up the skills of current Scouting America trainers, as well. The skills and strategies presented here have been shown to improve teaching and learning—and will be of value to you, not only in your role in Scouting, but also in the ways that you communicate with others. Fundamentals Part 1: Science of Training is required for staffing NYLT and preferred for Wood Badge staffing.

Fundamentals Part 2: Craft of Training

This course is the second part of the train-the-trainer continuum. Fundamentals Part 2: Craft of Training is a required course for Wood Badge, Leadership Challenge, and NAYLE training faculty. It is recommended training for all Scouting America trainers. The purpose of this course is to learn about and practice the platform skills of a trainer and is meant to supplement what you learned in Fundamentals Part 1: Science of Training. You will have the opportunity to give two presentations during the day and receive feedback on your presentations.

  • Pre-course Preparation for Fundamentals Part 2: Craft of Training – Prepare a 10‐ to 12‐minute presentation on a topic of your choice from any Scouting America material. Your presentation should allow you to demonstrate the skills of a trainer. You will receive constructive feedback on your presentation from the other learners.
