Past Project Examples
Milkweed to Monarchs
Ben R. lives in a Monarch Butterfly corridor.
His project: Scatter 17,500 Milkweed Seed balls in Val Verde and Kinney County since 2015.
85% sprout rate.
Creating Coral Reefs
Ryan S. built artificial reefs which were placed in the Gulf of Mexico to help regrow the diminishing coral reef population.
Fishing Line Recycling
Astrid TJ. installed monofilament recycling receptacles at county parks to reduce the danger to fish and wildlife.
Rain Garden
Riley S. built a rain garden and developed public education materials in English and Spanish to explain the benefits of reducing parking lot runoff.
Save Native Species
Archer H. wanted to preserve a native drought-tolerant species of tree called the Texas ash.
Tens of millions of native ash trees have been lost across the country due to the accidental introduction of a pest called the emerald ash borer.
Plastic Bag Recycling Program
Ben R. led efforts to create a county-wide plastic bag recycling program.
Gault Archeological Site Erosion Control
John C
The Gault Archeological site contains evidence of human habitation for at least 20,000 years. The site has significant soil erosion due to water runoff that can impact archeological operations. My project installed 65 feet of gabion baskets to slow water runoff and prevent further damage to the site.
Lake Pointe Outdoor Classroom
Jaden C
A part of the Lake Pointe Subdivision was set aside for the specific preservation of endangered songbirds, the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo. This is a part of the Balcones Preserve system. To build continued support and understanding for the Preserve, my project created a viewing area and installed National Park grade signs to create an outdoor classroom.
